I Moved from New York City to Raleigh 5 Years Ago — These 5 Things Surprised Me Most

For years, I believed I was a “New York or nowhere” kind of person. I grew up just outside the city, spent weekends exploring new restaurants in Manhattan, and always planned to build my adult life there. But life has a funny way of shifting your priorities.

New York City
Raleigh, NC

Five years ago, my husband and I made that major change. What started as a hunt for more space and a lower cost of living quickly turned into something much bigger. We found a city that not only surprised us but completely changed how we define "home." Here are the five biggest surprises I discovered after trading the Big Apple for the City of Oaks.

  1. The Food Scene Is Seriously Impressive

My biggest fear was missing New York's endless food options. Spoiler: I didn’t. Raleigh—and nearby Durham—have a shockingly diverse and high-quality food scene. From Ethiopian and Indian to Korean BBQ and even authentic omakase sushi (at half the NYC price), I’ve never felt like I’m missing out. The only thing I truly miss is a good New York bagel, but that's a universal truth for any ex-New Yorker.

  2. You Get Access to 4 Distinct Cities

Living in Raleigh means you’re just a short drive from several neighboring cities: Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, and Apex. Each has its own vibe, from Chapel Hill's cozy college-town feel to Durham's funky, artsy energy. It reminds me of how NYC's boroughs are unique—but here, there’s far more parking and much less stress. I love exploring four different “mini-cities” all within the Triangle area.

  3. Raleigh Is Incredibly Dog-Friendly

I used to take my dog everywhere in New York, but Raleigh has taken pet-friendliness to a new level. Dog parks and hiking trails are everywhere, and most local businesses welcome dogs—even some bars and cafes that serve food. There are regular dog-friendly events, and I’ve never had to second-guess whether my pup is welcome. It’s one of the best cities I’ve found for dog owners.

  4. Snow Days Are a Celebration Here

Growing up in New York meant slushy sidewalks and icy commutes. The mild winters in North Carolina were an instant win, but the real surprise was how fun snow days are. Even an inch of snow can shut down the city, turning the day into a spontaneous holiday. It made me realize how magical snow can be when it’s a rare treat, not a daily grind.

  5. Southern Hospitality Is Real—And It's Wonderful

I thought Southern hospitality was a cliché. As a New Yorker, I was used to being independent and a little suspicious of overly friendly strangers. But Raleigh changed that. When we moved in, neighbors stopped by to introduce themselves, some with flowers. This generosity and warmth is baked into the culture here. People genuinely look out for one another.

Leaving NYC Was Hard, But Raleigh Surprised Me in the Best Way

I didn’t expect to fall in love with a city so different from New York, but Raleigh has shown me a new kind of lifestyle—one with space, friendliness, great food, and real connection. If you're thinking about moving, don’t overlook North Carolina’s capital. It might just surprise you, too.
