Costco shoppers in a dozen states are being urged to throw away bottles of Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene after reports that they could unexpectedly shatter or pop their corks.
The recall applies to bottles purchased between April 25 and August 26. Costco issued a letter to customers warning that the prosecco — made in Italy and sold under the warehouse club’s popular Kirkland Signature brand — could be hazardous even when unopened.
"If you have an unopened bottle, do not open it," the letter read. "Dispose of the bottle immediately by wrapping it in paper towels and placing it in a plastic bag before placing it in the garbage to avoid risk from shattered glass."
Costco emphasized that customers should not return the bottles to stores but can receive a full refund by presenting the recall letter at their local warehouse.

Customer Complaints
Some shoppers have already described dangerous experiences.
Danielle Callas, a customer in Chicago, told The New York Times that while none of her bottles shattered, the corks had popped out on their own on three separate occasions.
During one incident at a bridal shower, the cork struck her friend in the eye, sending prosecco spilling across the table.
Not Costco’s First Recall
The prosecco recall follows other recent safety alerts. In November, Costco recalled:
-
Eggs over potential Salmonella contamination.
-
Butter because labels failed to note that it contained milk.
Despite these incidents, Costco’s stock has remained resilient, rising about 5% in the past year.
What Shoppers Should Do
Customers in affected states should:
-
Dispose of unopened bottles following Costco’s safety instructions.
-
Avoid attempting to open the bottles, as they could shatter or launch corks.
-
Bring the recall letter to Costco for a full refund.
