A U.S. family moved abroad seeking culture, lifestyle, and balance in Spain.

They tested three different Spanish cities before deciding where to settle.

The experience revealed the importance of community, pace of life, and cultural fit in choosing a new home.
Moving abroad is often romanticized as a leap into adventure, but in reality, it is also a journey of trial, adjustment, and discovery. For my son and me, leaving the United States for Spain was both exciting and daunting. We didn’t just want to change locations we wanted to change our lives.
Instead of settling immediately in one place, we gave ourselves the freedom to try different Spanish cities before making a final decision. What followed was a journey through three distinct urban landscapes, each with its own flavor, culture, and challenges, before we finally found the city that felt like home.
Our first stop was Madrid, Spain’s vibrant capital. The city welcomed us with energy: wide boulevards, late-night cafés, world-class museums, and an endless stream of cultural events. For my son, the excitement was contagious the parks, soccer matches, and churros with chocolate made every day an adventure.
But Madrid also came with the reality of a big city: higher costs, crowded metros, and a pace that sometimes felt too similar to what we had left behind in the U.S. While we loved visiting, the city felt more like a thrilling stopover than a long-term fit for our new lifestyle.
Next, we headed south to Seville, where life slowed down. The city’s orange-scented streets, historic architecture, and lively flamenco culture made us feel immersed in the true spirit of Spain. People here lingered over meals, and neighbors greeted one another warmly.
For my son, the community spirit and outdoor plazas provided a sense of belonging. But as summer temperatures climbed past 100 degrees, we realized that the city’s scorching heat would be tough to manage year after year. While we cherished Seville’s warmth and charm, we knew it wasn’t our forever home.
Finally, we arrived in Valencia a coastal city with a perfect blend of culture, affordability, and livability. Here, we discovered a balance that felt right: Mediterranean beaches for weekends, vibrant local markets for daily life, and a slower pace than Madrid without losing the conveniences of a major city.
Valencia’s bike-friendly streets and abundant green spaces gave us freedom and comfort. For my son, the city felt safe and inviting, while for me, it offered a community of both locals and fellow expats who welcomed us warmly.
It was in Valencia that we finally exhaled. The rhythm, the people, and the lifestyle aligned with what we had been searching for a place to put down roots without losing the sense of adventure that had brought us to Spain in the first place.
Our journey through three cities taught us that choosing a new home abroad is not just about beauty or excitement it’s about fit. The right city is one where your daily routines feel natural, where your child feels safe and happy, and where the culture supports the life you want to build.
Moving abroad is as much about trial and error as it is about discovery. By giving ourselves the time and flexibility to explore, we found a city that truly felt like ours.
Today, Valencia is no longer just where we live it’s where we belong. The move from the U.S. was not simply about changing countries, but about reshaping our lives. And after testing Madrid’s energy, Seville’s charm, and Valencia’s balance, we finally found the place where both my son and I could thrive.
