Kate Hudson says her mornings are all about balance, mindfulness, and sunshine and they don’t involve her phone.
The 46-year-old actress and entrepreneur opened up about her daily routine in an interview with EatingWell, revealing that she spends her early hours in a calm, unplugged environment before her children wake up.
“I wake around 6 a.m. and do some sort of meditation practice while I drink warm water with lemon,” Hudson said. “I also try not to look at my phone during this time.”
Roughly an hour later, she reaches for coffee or tea and heads outside to connect with nature. “I walk outside barefoot and do sun gazing, which is one of my new favorite things to do before my kids wake up,” she said. “Sun gazing is a great new thing I do in the morning: It’s beneficial for your circadian rhythm and sets your body up for the day.”
While directly staring at the sun is unsafe and can cause permanent eye damage, experts agree that exposing yourself to natural sunlight shortly after waking up can help regulate your body clock. Morning sunlight exposure boosts serotonin the “feel-good” hormone responsible for stabilizing mood and supports vitamin D production, which strengthens bones and the immune system.
Studies have also shown that spending time outdoors early in the day can reduce stress, improve mental clarity, and even lower inflammation levels.
Hudson’s mornings also include healthy eating habits. She told EatingWell that her breakfast is usually a protein shake, and her refrigerator is stocked with ready-to-eat, nutrient-rich snacks. “In my refrigerator, I cut carrots, cucumber, jícama, and peppers in Mason jars with a little water at the bottom, and cut fruit such as mango, pineapple, and berries,” she said. “When the kids want a snack, I tell them to open up the fridge.”
When evening comes, Hudson prioritizes rest and quiet though she admits she has one indulgent habit before bed. “It varies, but I like to get into bed really early and try to read before I go to sleep,” she said. “It’s hard sometimes because I’m obsessed with home furniture and looking at live auction sites not to buy anything, but to browse and see what’s out there.”
Hudson’s low-stress lifestyle echoes a growing trend among celebrities and executives who emphasize mindful routines as key to their productivity and well-being.
Disney CEO Bob Iger has said he wakes up at 4:15 a.m. and avoids checking his phone until after his morning workout. “It’s vital to have the energy and the clarity to organize your thoughts before taking on the day,” Iger explained.
Model and businesswoman Cindy Crawford also follows a phone-free start to her mornings, choosing to focus instead on self-care rituals. “I listen to a Bible podcast or whatever,” she told Newspapers. “That’s my first input while I’m doing my dry brushing and putting body oil on. I don’t look at my messages or emails until I’ve taken that time for myself.”
For Hudson, those early hours filled with quiet, sunlight, and intention are what ground her amid a busy life. Her approach blends mindfulness and practicality, offering a glimpse into how one of Hollywood’s most active personalities maintains her sense of balance.
