If you’ve spent much time scrolling through social media recently, you might have noticed that tech jargon has become mainstream in a way nobody could have guessed. These are not the sorts of words most people heard growing up, and yet they now lace tech conversations each day — in many cases, whether people understand what they have to do with things or not.

Much of the buzz — and annoyance — around AI terms stem from how fast they come and go. Yesterday’s avant-garde term feels like today’s cliché. When chatbots began cranking out incorrect answers with utmost certainty, the phenomenon was known to researchers as “hallucination,” and suddenly the internet went buck wild speculating that machines were tripping balls. Then came “alignment,” a word that began life as shorthand for ethical considerations in academic discussions but is now used to refer to how well an AI system does what you want it to, without horrible side effects. There’s also “multimodal,” which may sound complicated but just means systems that can mix texts and images with sound and video.

Part of the reason this vocabulary took off is that companies started using these words to describe themselves in marketing materials. Every time a new AI product is unveiled, the code words come fast and furious: Reinforcement learning! Unsupervised learning! Deep learning! Over time, even the most buzzword-adverse become unable to resist the temptation to throw their hat onto the ring of machine intelligence. And that has resulted in a shareable and highly public sense of FOMO over all things AI — even though explanations often are shaky at best and change depending on who you’re talking to. It’s why so many people were drawn to what began as a basic quiz: It can cut through the noise and ask readers straight-up if they have real knowledge of the language or are just parroting it.

Beneath the humor is also an insight into how people respond when they’re questioned about the mechanics behind AI. Some recognize that things are not nearly as deep as they’d believed. A quiz is no longer just entertainment, but a small pinprick of where the public stands in its comprehension of a fast-moving technology that touches everything from work to education to creativity.

The ability to understand AI vocabulary is starting to be seen as a part of cultural fluency, akin to understanding social-media slang or gaming jargon was for certain segments of society. The difference between then and now is that AI jargon isn’t merely an online culture; it is a workplace culture.

People passing or failing the quizzes doesn’t matter that much. What’s significant is that the increasingly widespread feeling that the language of AI is no longer funny business. The people who are constructing these systems are speaking a language that everyone else is trying to translate. And as A.I. continues to charge ahead — faster than regulators, faster than educators and far, far faster than the majority of companies can understand or adapt — even just mastering some basic computational vocabulary makes it feel like we’re clawing back a small modicum of control.

Perhaps that’s why these quizzes solicit such strong reactions. Some feel proud. Some feel exposed. Some are frustrated that they’re being graded by a machine’s vocabulary. But they’re all part of an era when society is struggling to keep up with technology that marches on whether we want it to or not.

Ultimately the point of testing your AI jargon isn’t to show off that you’re smarter than the machines. It’s to show that you’re not going to get left behind by the machines — or the hype surrounding them.
